Plot Synopsis by Seth, '80s HBO children's movies fanatic: Growing up isn't easy and nothing ever turns out right -- especially for young witch in training Mildred Hubble. She is trying to find her way in a picaresque English countryside school for witches run by Mrs. Garret from The Facts of Life, who is sympathetic to the bumbling Mildred (Fairuza Balk in her first turn as an occult goddess). Mildred's potions backfire, she fails miserably at inter mural witch games (i.e., Terror Tag, of which she is picked last to add insult to injury) and although basically proficient at broom flying she puts her cat in her satchel instead of on her broom (a sign of her ability to think outside the box, yet still mistaken for incompetence again).
Her arch rival is a pretty blond witch, whom Mildred turns into pig (she was trying to turn her into a frog). Mildred eventually saves the whole school from attack by Mrs. Garret's evil twin who lives in the swamps outside the school grounds. You can to tell the evil Mrs. Garrett because she has bubble gum pink hair and sings a lot. Mildred turns her and her evil crew into Es cargo. Mildred, by saving the school, even wins the heart of Dame Diana Rigg and the Grand Dragon (or Wizard) Tim Curry, who makes all the young witches swoon at the sight of his curly pompadour and the timber of his basso profundo singing voice. Tim Curry takes out his tambourine and whisks Mildred away for a private flying lesson on his huge cape. All the little girl witches clap and Mildred is dipped into hot molten bronze and placed over the fire place in Mrs. Garret's office to be displayed as a warning to all future trouble makers who attempt rehabilitation.
Brain Games is now . . . over. |
